The School of Engineering Sciences in Chemistry, Biotechnology and Health consists of nine departments, and over 850 co-workers. It is represented in four strategically important locations in the Stockholm area – centrally at Campus Valhallavägen, at Alba Nova University Center close to physics departments at both Stockholm University and KTH, in the medical technology hub Campus Flemingsberg, and at the national research center SciLifeLab and the Karolinska Institute in Solna. The departments of Fibre and Polymer Technology, where the position is placed, has around 130 co-workers and is divided in 7 different divisions of which the Fibre Technology is one. The Fibre Technology has around 25 co-workers divided on 4 seniors, 4 Post doctors and Doctoral students.

Job description

The Post doctor project is part of the new Treesearch collaboration at KTH, where industry and universities have a very close collaboration to develop new and improved materials based on the renewable forest raw material (http://www.treesearch.se/en).

The postdoctoral project will be carried out in close collaboration with Ahlström-Munksjö AB and the aim of the project is to identify the molecular interactions that exists between conductive carbon-based materials/conductive polymers and different types of fibers and fibrils from wood. The background is that fiber/fibril-based materials have proved to be very useful in the manufacture of capacitors/batteries and other types of electrically interactive materials due to their good mechanical properties and durability of the fibers / fibrils to demanding chemical environments. It has also been found that there is a very good interaction between conductive material and cellulose, which means that water-repellent, conductive material can be dispersed in water phase and that the production of base material for capacitors and batteries can take place in water-based systems.

The project will focus on clarifying the molecular interactions that exist between conductive materials both in the form of graphene/carbon nanotubes and conductive polymers as well as how fibers / fibrils should be tailored to optimize this interaction. The work also includes the production of active components based on composite materials of fiber/fibrils and conductive materials.

Qualifications

We are looking for you who:

  • Have good academic records.
  • Have a PhD in basic properties of cellulose-based materials or in organic electronics
  • Have a good knowledge of how fiber-based materials can be modified to produce new materials and interactive electronic devices.
  • Know how to evaluate the properties of these devices.
  • Have experience in using laboratory equipment such as AFM, QCM, SEM, TEM, FTIR.
  • Are fluent in English, not only for academic writing but also for oral communication.

It will be considered an advantage if you have additional knowledge or experience in (wood) fibre technology or other bio-based materials.

Great emphasis will be placed on personal competence and suitability. The work will also be conducted in close co-operation with Ahlström-Munksjö AB.
