Production engineering (IIP) includes techniques which mainly concern engineer technical development of products, processes, systems and methods that have direct impact on this production. The area includes everything from engineering aspects of manufacturing to assembly of components for functional products and recycling issues associated with these disciplines.

Job description

The research group in manufacturing and metrology systems (MMS) within the department of Production Engineering is offering a postdoc position focusing on measurement, modelling and simulation of functional surfaces. Initially, the position will start for a year, with potential possibilities of extension. The successful candidate will join a research group that is focusing on novel design and modelling methodologies, utilizing precision engineering principles, for the controlling of surface generation. The work is focusing on a special abrasive process (on the basis of existing production procedures) with micro-texturing utilizing abrasive technologies.

The position is associated with the following sub-topics:

  • Computation of process kinematic and process optimization.
  • Developing an evaluation methodology for the textured surface.
  • Uncertainty analysis and error budgets.
  • Verification and validation (V&V) trough experiments.

The candidate will be responsible to develop new strategies for measurement, modelling and simulation of surface texturing including:

  • Development of a model representation and run simulations.
  • Development of an evaluation methodology.
  • Planning and running experiments for validation and verification (V&V).

Furthermore, the applicant will also support teaching activates, such as co-super visioning of doctoral students and master student.


We are looking for a strongly motivated person, who is able to work independently, as well as within a research group. To be suitable in the group, the candidate must have a good ability to work with cross-cultural and cross-funcual teams. The successful applicant should have an outstanding research and publication record, which will be shown in the candidate’s ability to generate both short-term and long-term research ideas. Well-developed analytical and problem solving skills are a requirement. Excellent command of English orally and in writing is required. In addition, previous participation in EU research projects and proposal writing skills will be considered a merit.

The candidate must hold a Ph.D. degree, which must have been taken no longer than three years ago, (in mechanical engineering, production engineering, engineering physics or equivalent areas) with a specialization in precision engineering, metrology, modelling and simulations, and documented skills related to numerical methods. Candidates who are near an Ph.D. exam may also qualify for this position.

The candidate should have experience of working with/developing measurement and modelling in precision engineering applications. In the selection process, special attention will be given to strong candidates in the areas of modelling and simulation, machining and metrology (fair knowledge about traditional and modern instrumentation for characterization of functional surface). Competence in industrial metrology with a good understanding of the role of measurement in the production chain and measurement planning is also advantageous for the position.

Previous experience in abrasive machining, surface metrology and physical process modelling are all considered as an important merit, but this is not a strict requirement. Since the majority of the project consists of hands-on work in the lab, practical skills will be considered valuable. Further, the project is run in a wide international collaboration, adaptive communication skills and social dexterity should be applicable to ensure a pleasant and productive team work.
