KTH Royal Institute of Technology, School of Engineering Sciences

KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm has grown to become one of Europe’s leading technical and engineering universities, as well as a key centre of intellectual talent and innovation. We are Sweden’s largest technical research and learning institution and home to students, researchers and faculty from around the world. Our research and education covers a wide area including natural sciences and all branches of engineering, as well as architecture, industrial management, urban planning, history and philosophy.

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Engineering Mechanics

This position as a Doctoral student will be performed within INTERFACE, a research environment funded by the Swedish Research Council using multiscale methods to study boiling, friction and synthesis of biomaterials. In this particular project, molecular dynamics computer simulations will be used to study the interactions (i.e. forces) between cellulose nanofibrils. The motion of the fibrils in different flow conditions will be studied in a parallel project.

The overarching goal is to understand and predict self-assembly, spontaneous ordering and/or synthesis of advanced biomaterials. In order to utilize this more efficiehtly, a better understanding of how charged fibrils and ions in the surrounding liquid (usually water) affect each other is needed. The combination of molecular dynamics simulations in this project and fluid mechanical modelling in the parallel project will provide the necessary knowledge.

The successful candidate probably has a background in physics, chemestry or scientific computing together with an interest to work in a multidisciplinary research environment.
