Third-cycle subject: Chemistry

A graduate student position in a joint project between the Department of Protein Science and Department of Chemistry.

Do you want to help us understand the molecular architecture of some of nature’s strongest materials?

Proteins have great potential to be used to produce new materials for many different applications, such as medical biomaterials or textile fibers. One example of a natural material used in both of these areas is silk. With modern biotechnology we can design protein materials with tailored features. The research project is a collaboration between My Hedhammar's group, studying recombinant spider silk proteins and Christofer Lendel's group investigating protein nanofibrils from industrial by-products. The material properties of both of these systems are strongly linked to the molecular structure of the proteins and, in particular, to the way they form beta-sheet structure.

What we offer

In this project we want to study the structure of these materials at the molecular level with solid-state NMR. This method has developed very rapidly in recent years and is today the primary method of high-resolution structural studies of protein nanostructures. The NMR studies will be complemented by electron microscopy experiments.

You will get extensive hands-on experience from protein chemistry, recombinant production of proteins, peptide synthesis, solid-state NMR experiments, electron microscopy and structure modeling.

The work will be supervised by docent/universitetslektor My Hedhammar at the Department of Protein Science and docent Christofer Lendel at the Division of Applied Physical Chemistry.




To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § högskoleförordningen), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:

  • passed a degree at advanced level,
  • completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level, or
  • in any other way acquired within or outside the country acquired essentially equivalent knowledge.


We are looking for a creative and motivated candidate with a masters degree (or similar) in a subject relevant for the project, e.g. structure biology or biophysical chemistry. Since the project is multidisciplinary, the candidate should also have a strong interest to broaden her/his knowledge and take on new challenges with enthusiasm. We highly value the ability to work independently as well as in group and to take responsibility for the progress of the work. Previous experience from experimental work with solid-state NMR is a strong merit. Proven skills in oral and written English are required.

In order to succeed as an doctoral student at KTH you need to be goal oriented and persevering in your work. In the selection of the applicants, the following will be assessed:

Information regarding admission and employment

Only those who are or have been admitted to third-cycle studies may be employed as a doctoral student. The term of the initial contract may not exceed one year. The employment may be extended for a maximum of two years at a time. However, the total period of employment may not exceed the equivalent of four years of full-time study. Decisions on employment as a doctoral student may not be appealed.

Doctoral students should primarily devote themselves to their own education, but may engage in teaching, research, and administration corresponding to a maximum of 20 % of a full-time position.
