KTH is now developing a brand new research and education department in the subject area of Sustainable production. During 2016 and 2017 we are recruiting new faculty members: among others three Professors, four Associate Professors and one Assistant Professor in the areas of Production management, Production logistics and Strategic maintenance and dependability. In addition, there are resources to recruit Ph.D. students, industrial Ph.D. students, Adjunct Professors and Postdocs. For the new department, a new, attractive and functional campus is being built in the Northern city centre of Södertälje, 30 km south of Stockholm, the capital of Sweden. The focused effort on Sustainable production at KTH is a joint initiative with Scania and AstraZeneca, both with large, expanding and globally competitive production sites in close vicinity of the new campus area.

Industrial operation and maintenance

Subject description

The subject field is comprised of maintenance planning and condition-based maintenance in manufacturing industries. This implies planning, development and controlling sustainable and robust production systems with focus on technical strategies, methods, tools and models.


The duties of the position include teaching and research. As a teacher you will have overall responsibility for your courses. This means not only teaching, but also supervising master thesis and PhD students, development work, examinations, evaluations and responsibility for program and course goal alignment. As a teacher, you will actively cooperate with colleagues in the courses and programs you teach. The teaching at the basic level is in Swedish and in English for the advanced level.

The research assignment means autonomously establishing new collaboration and research projects, obtaining research funding, leading research, establishing close collaboration with other departments at KTH, as well as cooperating with industry and the public sector.


Those qualified for appointment as an associate professor are persons who have:

  1. been awarded a PhD or has the corresponding research competence or some other professional expertise that is of value in view of the subject matter of the post and the duties that it will involve, and
  2. demonstrated teaching expertise.

Grounds of assessment The assessment criteria for appointment as an associate professor at KTH shall be the degree of expertise required as a qualification for employment. In addition, the assessment criteria stated in the KTH appointments procedure, section 1.2., apply in relation to the employment profile laid down.

Of highest importance is the applicant’s

  • research expertise in the subject field, documented through publications in journals and technical reports
  • documented teaching skills in the subject field
  • documented experience of working with industrial operation and maintenance
  • know-how in production technology with documented experience of working within the manufacturing industry or any equivalent experience

Of second highest importance is the applicant’s

  • ability to pursue third-stream activities and also provide information about research and development work
  • ability to communicate, work in a structured manner, collaborate, work autonomously as well as being quality-conscious
  • expertise to develop and lead activities and staff. This includes knowledge of diversity and equal treatment issues with a particular focus on gender equality

It is also important that the applicant has

  • ability to use the Swedish language, spoken as well as written, in teaching
  • documented experience in developing courses
  • administrative skills
