Subject description

Ergonomics is an interdisciplinary subject that deals with integrated knowledge about human abilities, needs and limitations in the interactions between humans-technology-organization-environment. The subject consists of physiological, physical and psychosocial work, cognitive ergonomics and work organization. The subject ergonomics with specialization in technology systems is mainly focused on the design of work systems in industrial and healthcare organizations but may also include other work systems.

Duties

The associate professor is expected to actively contribute to the university's effort in the field, actively lead and participate in development, planning and implementation of educational programs and courses in the discipline, and actively lead development, planning and implementation of research projects. Further, the associate professor is expected to recruit a research group, lead this and develop it. In particular, disciplinary applications in the field of ergonomics should be focussed. The tasks include responsibility for course development, teaching, course responsibility and program responsibility. Teaching and supervision of students take place at undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels.

The duties include taking initiatives to establish new collaborations and research projects, obtain research funding, lead research projects, carry out research, supervise graduate students, and to interact with business and society. Further, the character of the subject means that the associate professor is expected to run extensive collaboration with industry and other organizations, where important and current work environment issues are to be researched. The associate professor is also expected to actively participate in the research community as reviewer, expert, opponent and lecturer. Tasks within leadership and collaboration include support and feedback to colleagues in teaching, research and participation in improvement activities, internal and external faculty work and participation in knowledge exchange with the society.

Eligibility

Those qualified for appointment as an associate professor are persons who have

  • been awarded a PhD or has the corresponding research competence or some other professional expertise that is of value in view of the subject matter of the post and the duties that it will involve, and
  • demonstrated teaching expertise.

Grounds of assessment

The assessment criteria for appointment as an associate professor at KTH shall be the degree of expertise required as a qualification for employment. In addition, the assessment criteria stated in the KTH appointments procedure, section 1.2., apply in relation to the employment profile laid down. 

Of highest importance is the applicant´s

  • scientific skills within the field of ergonomics, shown through scientific publications, conference participation, establishment of research collaboration and other tasks in the research community, such as rewiew or expert assessments,
  • potential of independent development as a researcher and teacher within the field of ergonomics and ability to establish, renew and develop the discipline
  • teaching skills within ergonomics, shown by documented experience of teaching, course development and supervision with good quality.

Of second highest importance is the applicant´s

  • skills in developing and managing activities and staff, which includes knowledge of diversity and equality issues with a particular focus on gender equality,
  • skills in developing and carry out projects in ergonomics from a perspective of technology systems,
  • ability to interact and communicate with different actors in society, including industry, and to inform about research and development in Swedish and English,
  • ability to communicate, work in a structured way, show awareness of quality issues and good ability to take initiatives,
  • ability to collaborate.

It is also important that the applicant has

  • good administrative skills.
