Subject description

The subject area for the position is organic chemistry in a wide sense. It includes experimental studies, which may be combined with theoretical studies.


The appointment includes research, research supervision, and education within the subject area. The appointee is also expected to teach at basic (BSc / MSc) and advanced level within the curriculum of the School of Engineering Sciences in Chemistry, Biotechnology and Health.


Those qualified for appointment as an associate professor are persons who have:

  • been awarded a PhD or has the corresponding research competence or some other professional expertise that is of value in view of the subject matter of the post and the duties that it will involve, and
  • demonstrated teaching expertise

Grounds of assessment

The assessment criteria for appointment as an associate professor at KTH shall be the degree of expertise required as a qualification for employment. In addition, the assessment criteria stated in the KTH appointments procedure, appendix 2, apply in relation to the employment profile laid down.

Of highest importance is the applicant’s

  • research expertise in the subject field of organic chemistry and ability to perform research of high international standard
  • teaching skills in the organic chemistry, especially synthetic organic chemistry, physical organic chemistry and spectroscopic methods in organic chemistry, and ability and to perform high quality undergraduate and graduate teaching
  • ability to obtain external research funding

Of second highest importance is the applicant’s

  • ability and interest to develop and further education within the subject area at both basic, advanced, and graduate levels

It is also important that the applicant has

  • ability to pursue third-stream activities and provide information about research and development work
  • expertise to develop and lead activities and staff. This includes knowledge of diversity and equal treatment issues with a particular focus on gender equality
  • documented interpersonal and administrative skills
