Subject description

The subject consists of basic and applied studies of energy processes, especially those including chemical conversion, but also studies of complete energy systems from a mass and energy balance point of view. The subject includes the individual chemical conversion components that forms the system as well as the system itself and its interaction with the surroundings. Sustainability and economics and circular economy are of central importance. The systems, including its components, may be e.g a heat and power system, a conventional chemical process system but also e.g. a vehicle. Aspects concerning both recourses necessary for the systems and the user or product side of the systems are part of the subject with a major concern on resources and waste.


The position includes research, supervision of PhD students and teaching within the subject area. The employee is also expected to take part in teaching outside of her/his primary field, within the bachelor and master programmes given by the departments in the chemistry and chemical engineering fields.

Teaching at KTH is given both in Swedish (bachelor level) and English (master level). The ambition of the applicants should be to be able to teach in Swedish within two years of the employment.

The employment is part of the Tenure-track system at KTH, which means that KTH gives dedicated support on career development, which also includes courses in Swedish.


A person qualified to be employed as an assistant professor is a person who has received a Doctor of Philosophy in chemical engineering or has a foreign examination that is assessed to be corresponding to a Doctor of Philosophy in the same subject area. In the first instance, a person should be considered who has received the Doctor of Philosophy qualification or corresponding competence at the most five years before the expiry of the period for applications.

Grounds of assessment

The assessment criteria for appointment as an assistant professor at KTH are stated in the KTH appointments procedure 1.3 and apply in relation to the employment profile laid down.

Of highest importance is the applicant’s

  • demonstrated scientific skill in chemical engineering focusing on energy processes, through international publishing and/or through experience of industrial research and development work.
  • the ability to teach in thermodynamics, transport phenomena including mass transport and unit operations and a keen interest in developing teaching within the subject area.
  • the ability and practical experience of problem solving and implementation of new knowledge through, for example, experimental or simulated methods

Of second highest importance is the applicant’s

  • ability to interact with society by e.g. informing on research and development work
  • documented collaborative ability

It is also important that the applicant has

  • the ability and skill to develop and lead activities and staff (including knowledge of diversity and equal treatment issues with a particular focus on gender equality)
  • pedagogical experience and teaching skills in Swedish, ability to receive external research funding

Time limitation: The appointment is for an indefinite term, but no more than six years, and may be extended if, due to the teacher’s absence due to sick leave, parental leave or other special grounds, more time is required to reach the objectives of the appointment.
