Job description

As a doctoral student, you will be working with different aspects of smart manufacturing, especially to bring forward the application and implementation of smart manufacturing methods applied for powertrain manufacturing. You will be systematically analyzing the aspects of digital thread and twinning, model-based data analytics and digital infrastructure for smart manufacturing in ordered to understand how these aspects can be exploited in powertrain manufacturing. These findings should then be implemented, tested and verified in a test environment for smart manufacturing. You will support in ongoing research activities in the area for further technical development and reporting as both project deliverables and scientific publications.

Furthermore, you are expected to:

  • contribute and support in generating new research ideas that can lead to research proposals
  • have the ability to generate short-term research ideas for student and concept testing projects
  • be open-minded in collaborating with other researchers in similar topics. 

In addition to the above, you will participate in supporting activities at the PMH Application Lab as well as supervision of student assistants and thesis work by students at the undergraduate and advanced level.


To be qualified for this position you must hold a M.Sc. degree in mechanical engineering with production engineering as the specialization or similar. It is important that you have knowledge in topics of industrial management and manufacturing engineering. Courses in Manufacturing Technology, Planning and Control; Product Lifecycle Management; Modeling and Simulation of Industrial Processes; CAD, CAM, FEM and Product Data Communication will be highly valued in selecting the candidate. 

It is important that you are well-organized, can assess systematically existing research documents and critically analyse existing work relevant to implementation of smart manufacturing. Having experience from similar activities as well as scientific work and scientific publications in the past is important.

During the implementation phase you will be working with programming of methods for a smart manufacturing network. Therefore, it is desired that you have experience from java programming that deals with digital twins and machine-to-machine communication. Knowledge in enterprise service bus, database and data lake technologies is also valuable for the position.

The position requires independent work, and you are expected to contribute in positioning PMH Application Lab in the international research field. Good knowledge of speech and technical writing in English is necessary to present and publish research results at international conferences and journals. You should also be able to express yourself orally in Swedish or be willing to learn Swedish. We will place great importance to your personal suitability.
